A few weeks ago I exchanged my 2nd generation iPod Nano for a new 4th generation Nano Chromatic one. Since I also have an iPod touch, I use it mostly for Nike++ running, to be a proper geek and get my runs in XML format that then a number of online services can visualize in nice ways.
There’s only one problem with it, Nike+ is buggy on 4th gen Nano’s. What happens is that after you complete your run, it just reboots itself, without saving the information of the run. I’ve tried a number of different techniques, from not touching it after ending a workout to just hoping that it’s going to work itself out over time.
The solution, to this problem, according to Apple’s peer support forum is to go out and buy an older iPod Nano. They should be fairly cheap on eBay and you don’t need to buy a new model, even 2nd gen that will hold battery for a few hours should be good enough for running.
There are some rumors that Apple is working on the fix, but until we see actual update, there’s nothing we can actually do.
Update
Apple has released Nano Update on 12th of November, that fixes this problem – 1.0.3:
iPod nano (4th generation) Software
Version 1.0.3
• Support for Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic
• Support for Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic
• Fixed instability issues when using Nike + iPod Sport Kit
• Added a setting to turn off Cover Flow when rotating iPod nano and a Cover Flow menu item under the Music menu
• When Shuffle setting is set to Songs, pressing play on a song in a saved Genius playlist will now follow the Shuffle setting
• After playing a slideshow with TV out, Cover Flow album art is no longer distorted
• Waking iPod nano after hibernating no longer distorts photos
• Other minor bug fixes
Wow, that kinda sucks.
I also own 2nd gen nano & Nike+ but have recently got the 4th gen for movies on the move…
I went for a run with new pod the other week & the over ear phones I use (Philips nothing special) have a headphone plug that is marginally larger than standard i-pod phones – looks like this has put pressure on the Nike+ receiver & now the pod wont connect via cable so wont charge or synch… nightmare. Be careful as this was not apparent when phones plugged in! I work in electronics so not some muppet forcing stuff that shouldn't go.
